Miners had to live as slaves in Scotland. Even as children they were helping to unload coal in baskets. It was a horrible existence that they could not move away because the mine owners felt that the workers were their property.
Mack managed to flee to London. But there he was about to be hanged. But at the last minute penalty was commuted to deportation ........................
The book was very exciting and well written. I could feel the action very closely when everything was so well described.
