In this entry in the continuing series about the childhood and adolescence of a motherless girl named Alice, she and her friends face their first year of high school. Alice is excited and nervous about the changes high school life will bring but one change she didn't anticipate was trouble in her relationship with her long-term boyfriend, Patrick. To further complicate matters, Alice and her friend Pamela learn a horrible secret about their friend Elizabeth, and Alice's father must deal with some rather unsettling news about his fiancé.
