With his characteristic warmth, inventiveness and brilliant wit, Alexander McCall-Smith gives us more of the gloriously entertaining comings and goings at 44 Scotland Street, the Edinburgh townhouse.

Six-year-old prodigy Bertie perseveres in his heroic struggle for truth and balanced good sense against his insufferable mother and her crony, the psychotherapist Dr Fairbairn. Domenica sets off on anthropological odyssey with pirates in the Malacca Straits, while Pat attracts several handsome admirers, including a toothsome suitor named Wolf. And Big Lou, eternal source of coffee and good advice to her friends, has love, heartbreak and erstwhile boyfriend Eddie's misdemeanours on her mind."

Utdrag ur boken:
As Dr Fairbairn gazed thoughtfully at Bertie, so too did Bertie gaze the psychotherapist. When they eventually took Dr Fairbairn off to hospital - to Carstairs - thought Bertie. would he be able to make friends there?

My feelings about Bertie is love. I think he is a wonderful boy and it's so interesting to read about him, what he says and what he thinks. One character I love too is the dog Cyril. He's always thinking of nice ankle to bite. It's a good book to read just to feel joy.
