It is a casual and low-key story where George Bowling thinks back to his childhood and his two years older brother. George loved to fish and read. It is this time George looks back to where he is now in his forties with false teeth and big belly examines himself in the mirror. He thinks about his girlfriend before the war, and in his meeting with his current wife. Then he decides to secretly visit his hometown and seek pond where the big fish was as long ago but his experience is not as he intended. Time has not stood still. Before he goes from there something bad happens. I think the book accurately describes events and thoughts that many had at the time.
